Feeling anxious about going into the MRI scanner is more common than it seems. With information and a few simple strategies, many people manage to have the exam calmly.
Tell the team when booking
This is the most important step. Knowing in advance, the team can get ready to welcome you more calmly and explain each stage of the exam.
What the exam is like
- You lie down, and the table slides into the scanner, which is open at both ends.
- The team is with you throughout the exam.
- The scanner makes loud, rhythmic noises while it takes the images. This is normal and does not mean anything went wrong.
- Depending on the area being examined, your head will not always be inside the scanner.
Tips that usually help
- Close your eyes before the table goes into the scanner and keep them closed.
- Breathe slowly, counting the length of each breath in and out.
- Think of something pleasant or count in your head.
- Ask the team how long each stage takes: knowing it is almost over helps.
- Wear comfortable clothes and use the restroom before the exam.
What if I can’t do it?
Talk to the team and to the doctor who ordered the exam. In some cases, the doctor may consider alternatives, such as sedation, which requires a specific indication and preparation.
