Women’s healthcare often includes imaging exams at different stages of life. Your doctor decides which exams to do, and how often, based on your age, family history and symptoms. Here are the three most common ones.
Mammography
It is the main exam for breast cancer screening, because it can show changes before they can be felt by touch. Brazilian medical societies recommend a yearly mammogram from age 40, but the advice may vary according to your history. Talk to your doctor.
Ultrasound
Pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound looks at the uterus and ovaries. Breast ultrasound is used alongside mammography, for example to investigate a lump or in denser breasts. It is an exam with no radiation.
Bone densitometry
It measures bone density and is the main exam to diagnose osteoporosis, which usually causes no symptoms until the first fracture. It is recommended for women from age 65 and, earlier, for those with risk factors, such as after menopause. Read more in Bone densitometry: who should have it and why.
You can do everything in one place
Vita Imagem performs mammography, ultrasound and bone densitometry. If your medical order includes more than one exam, ask when booking whether they can be done on the same day.
| Exam | Main preparation |
|---|---|
| Mammography | No deodorant, talc or cream on the breasts and armpits |
| Pelvic ultrasound | 4 glasses of water 1 hour before |
| Bone densitometry | No calcium supplements for 48 hours before |
